About Chris Loud

Intuitive abstract painting artist rooted in process, practice, and observation

I’m Chris Loud, a self-taught abstract painter working primarily with acrylic paint and mixed media. My work is primarily intuitive and process-driven, shaped by daily practice, observation, and a willingness to let each painting evolve without a fixed plan.

I began painting in 2020 after being inspired by the art and artists I encountered during local First Friday Art Walks. What started as curiosity quickly became a committed studio practice. Rather than focusing on a single style or outcome, I approach abstract painting as an ongoing exploration—one built through layering, revision, and responding to what’s already on the surface.

Much of my work develops slowly through accumulation. Shapes shift, colors interact, and textures build as decisions are made in response to the painting itself. I’m interested in the space between control and release, where intuition guides the next mark and clarity emerges through doing rather than planning.

Outside the studio, I’m a devoted movie watcher and draw a great deal of inspiration from film. I attend film festivals whenever possible—most notably the Telluride Film Festival each year—and regularly participate in weekly film discussions with a close friend. These conversations about storytelling, pacing, mood, and visual composition often find their way back into my painting practice, influencing how I think about structure, rhythm, and atmosphere on the canvas.

In addition to finished paintings, I regularly work through small studies, warm-up exercises, and limited-palette explorations. These practices help me stay present in the process and inform larger pieces over time. I often share this approach through articles, studio notes, and painting prompts, with the goal of demystifying abstract painting and encouraging consistent creative practice.

This website functions as an extension of the studio—a place to document work in progress, reflect on process, and share ideas gathered along the way. Whether you’re here to view abstract paintings, read about intuitive painting methods, or explore creative prompts, you’re invited to take your time and look closely.

The work continues to unfold, one layer at a time.
